English rock-and-roll legend Rod Stewart has put his custom-built estate in Beverly Hills up for sale this spring. The early-1990s compound in Beverly Park hit the open market recently with an eight-figure thud: $70 million, which buys three acres of grounds and a main house with almost 30,000 sq. ft. of interiors to wander.

The English Manor-style home begins, appropriately enough, with a two-level foyer with all the fixings: inlaid marble floor, symmetrical dual marble staircases with hand-wrought balustrades, marble columns, an upper-level overlook, and a gilt chandelier. Distantly, one can spot hand-milled crown moldings at the juncture of wall and ceiling.

That degree of detail is consistently sustained throughout much of the home’s shared living spaces. Dressed particularly formally for the shoot are the dining room and living room, and the master bathrooms; details include a carved fireplace, parquet and inlaid marble floors, matching oversized pink marble and green marble bathtubs, and milled plaster ceilings. The home’s emerald-colored pub is floored with remarkably figured stone.

The property’s 4,500 sq. ft. guest house brings the property-wide accommodations count to thirteen bedrooms and at least nineteen baths. The grounds feature romantic garden design, a sunken tennis court, and a large pool; a loggia surveys the outdoor trappings of success.

And to think it all started in a Gasoline Alley.
