Capturing the resilience and just plain fun of a Marvel Comics heroic staple this spring: Audemars Piguet. The esteemed Swiss watchmaker just released a new Spider-Man-themed timepiece called the Royal Oak Concept Tourbillon, ‘Spider-Man’ variety.
This is a tough, metallic Spidey, although snugly sized at 42mm and therefore not unwieldy. And it’s based on the comic books’ original artwork, not the Marvel Cinematic Universe evolution. The watch’s cosmetic appeal arises from a combination of titanium and black ceramic, with luminescent minute markers; the hero is presented in action, of course…and in white gold that’s been laser-engraved and hand-painted.
The mechanical complexity at bottom of the Royal Oak Concept Tourbillon ‘Spider-Man’ is Audemars Piguet’s Manufacture Calibre 2974. According to the company, it is a new design with a disarming simplicity.
Only 250 examples at about $215K using the current estimated rate of exchange. However, a single-example introductory version will be offered at auction, so those Spider-Man diehards should stay tuned.
