For the past two weeks, the Lamborghini website has been buzzing with news of ‘Project LB744’, the automaker’s new-generation hybrid hypercar. Lamborghini has always fashioned itself as an iconoclast, the Lennon to Ferrari’s McCartney if you will, and LB744 is positioned as a paradigmatic model.

In the end, Lamborghini decided on ‘Revuelto’ as the model name for Project LB744. The vehicle made its debut in the final days of March in Sant’Agata Bolognese, and earlier this week turned up at a formal unveiling for the U.S. market at a private showing in New York.

The Revuelto is a plug-in hybrid vehicle, but its powertrain is designed around a 6.5L V12 rated at 814 horses. The three electric motors on board are supporting players, and at present consumption and emissions are a matter of public conjecture and official approval. The result is a 1,001-horsepower fire-breather that rockets to 62 mph in 2.5 seconds. It’s also loaded with innovations, including a new carbon frame, aerodynamics that follow from the aerospace-informed shape, a monocoque made partially from forged composites, and a double-clutch transmission, a first for a Lambo V12.

The body language is also striking, echoing Lamborghini’s early moment of inspiration, the Countach prototype of half a century ago. Inside the car, Lambo designers have enhanced the jet cockpit-like feel evident in earlier models, with wheel controls including the rear wing and lift system. A new infotainment system that can adapt to driver needs and preferences is also featured.

Lamborghini hasn’t revealed pricing information about the Revuelto at this point. The car will be produced for the 2024 model year, with deliveries likely to begin in the final quarter of this year.
