Larry David Takes $6.9M for Montecito Retreat

The French Normandy-style house in Montecito snapped up late last year by Larry David has changed hands again.

David, one of the most notable Hollywood creatives thanks to hit shows Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, may also have an eye for a flip; he paid $5.7 million for the 1929-built, George Washington Smith-designed slice of period escapism, and passed it on to its new owner less than a year later for $6.9 million.

The property made it easy work. The house, an unmitigated charmer, is situated within decades of carefully tended flora and partially covered in a thick coat of amorous ivy. The landscaping is designed in the French garden style, helping to create a fantasy that’s cohesive and quite convincing.

A lack of interior images stymies before-and-after comparison, but it’s very likely David strategized the sale on the consolations of the property and its decades-long narrative; engaging in updates aside from a dust-up wouldn’t only be unnecessary, it may well have been contraindicated. All in all, this is a magical little house.

A look at the living room and its details — beamed mansard ceiling, fireplace with wood mantel within a fieldstone accent wall, French doors and casements — as well as the low beamed ceiling and colonial iron chandelier of the dining room and earthy greens of the kitchen, reveals much about the way in which the interior living style strikes a marvelous balance between period and contemporary.

The exterior details, which include Tudor touches, the romance of casement windows in stucco walls, and an eccentric and asymmetrical roofline, speak for themselves, particularly when combined with the landscaping, red brick patios, and gardens that frame the home.
