U.S. EV startup Lucid has been dealing with production woes this year. The launch editions of its Air sedan — the Air Dream Editions R and P — sold well to start things off, though, so to goose the order books a bit the company is returning to the form that defined the months of its initial deliveries: another special Air variation.

The Air Grand Touring Performance is the result, and with 1,050 horsepower it slots just under the lineup’s performance monster: the 1,111-horsepower Air Dream Edition P that sold out in relatively short order. Like other Air models, the Grand Touring Performance is also attractive due to its range: 466 miles on a full charge.

The powertrain of the $179K Air Grand Touring Performance is designed around a two-motor, axle-dedicated layout. Most EVs — especially of this class — are sold in California, so Lucid smartly oriented marketing toward denizens of that State: interior themes based on prominent Cali communities are turnkey customization options. Other features include 21-inch wheels, a 21-speaker sound system and massaging seats.

The Air Grand Touring Performance delivered an impressive performance at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, managing to clinch the top spot among production cars with a time of 50.79 seconds, and the 12th position overall. The impressive feat puts it ahead of many limited-edition supercars and will undoubtedly have a positive effect on brand image and customer interest.

The Air Grand Touring Performance starts at $179,000.
