Just in time for what promises to be another summer of record-breaking climate change temperatures, tech billionaire and Slack co-founder Stewart Butterfield set his sights on a Hamptons warm-weather retreat. He closed on it recently, according to The Wall Street Journal, forking over $32.2 million for the keys. The summer place features eleven bedrooms and twelve baths across 14,000 sq. ft. of interiors.

The house dates to 1910, but has seen a full revision in recent years. Its exterior speaks its history, with red brick and a slate roof inset with dormers various and sundry, including an eyebrow or two and a couple of turrets. It was designed by Grosvenor Atterbury, a noted architect who for a time worked at McKim, Mead & White, the firm that designed the Manhattan townhouse row where Bob Dylan once owned a residence.

Its interiors have been reimagined as high-dollar Spartan, with luxurious embellishments relegated to material choices and an overall sense of purity. Its design style depends on a contrast of bright off-white with natural-toned wide-plank hardwood, but even the home’s fireplaces have been denuded of their effusive Edwardian charm, and when it comes down to its sense of space and monastic serenity are its most compelling design features.

Amenities on the grounds include a greenhouse and that Hamptons essential, a Gunite pool. But here, too, space is essential, and the property’s tree-dotted plane of lawn and its orientation to farmland contextualize it in terms of breathing room and Long Island’s agrarian past.
