Back in the spring of 2021, Canadian media billionaire Taylor Thomson stepped up to buy Villa Ruchello, a 3.35-acre estate in Santa Monica with 14,000 sq. ft. of interiors, from Vice Media founder Shane Smith. She paid $48.7 million for the keys to the little oasis. According to Dirt, Thomson recently added to her real estate portfolio, plunking down $17.897 million for a 8,033 sq. ft. traditional in Brentwood.

Elsewhere in L.A., Thomson is wearing the seller’s hat. In the fall of 2021, she listed a Tudor—one of the first houses ever built in Bel Air—for $43 million. The price of that home was reduced to $39 million last month.

One can surmise that Thomson likes period houses. The Bel Air property was built in 1926; Villa Ruchello dates to 1932. And the most recent purchase is a heavily renovated home that was built in 1941. It features a two-entry façade with two sets of slate steps; inside the home, the living areas culminate in a great room with a double-height ceiling, a trio of multi-pane picture clerestories, a fireplace, and French doors.

The interior design style is meditative and a little bit ethereal. Off-white walls, doors, windows, and ceilings are the rule, with natural-toned hardwood plank to offer texture and definition. Other details include floating shelves, pendant fixtures various and sundry, floor-to-ceiling built-in bookshelves and, in the kitchen, a massive island.

The outdoor living space in the rear of the property takes up the lion’s share of the .87-acre lot size. A covered porch transitions to a tiered patio complex, with steps leading down to a freeform pool and poolside deck.

Thomson’s net worth is around $8 billion, per Bloomberg.
