El Fureidis, the famous ten acre estate in Montecito, popped up on the open market recently with an asking price of $39.995 million.

The property, which was completed in 1906, is notable for being one of just a handful of homes designed by architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue, for hosting a litany of household names including JFK and Einstein, and for being used as a shooting location by Brian de Palma for his film Scarface.

It was the complex of gardens, living areas and pool that de Palma used in his movie, and the estate’s grounds continue to offer an arresting vision of the landscaping possibilities of Montecito. The 10,000 sq. ft. house is designed in an ornamental combination style that mixes in Spanish and Middle Eastern influences.

The details inside the home are occasionally stunning; the dining room, with its ornate barrel ceiling and herringbone oak floor, is a good example. Throughout the home, the light fixtures, hand-painted and stenciled touches, carved wood, tile and abundant gilt consistently surprise.

The last time El Fureidis changed hands was 2015, when it fetched just $12.3 million.
