‘Great Gatsby’, ‘Moulin Rouge!’ Director Baz Luhrmann Asking $20M for Manhattan Townhouse

The Manhattan residence of feature director Baz Luhrmann appeared for sale this winter. The four-story Upper East Side townhouse is priced at a whisker under $20 million.

The six-bedroom property in Gramercy Park dates to 1925, but has been sensitively renovated in the past few years. The revised design style artfully updated the townhouse on the terms of its build era. Not a single revision looks startlingly out of place for the home’s Gilded Age vintage, and yet the reimagining is evident.

Some of the more memorable details that strike the eye here: the staircases, the patterned wall covering which pops up in different colors in different rooms, the carved limestone fireplace and parquet oak in the second floor living area, the arched doorways, and the individuality of the bathrooms.

Among this townhome’s amenities is a garden-level vestibule, a kitchen designed by Clive Christian, a balcony, an English basement with a screening room, a master with a private terrace, and of course an elevator.

Luhrmann doesn’t make a lot of films, but he does make a lot of hits. Among his blockbusters: William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge!, Australia, and The Great Gatsby. His upcoming projects include Elvis, with Tom Hanks.
