A BMW that rolls with design assistance from a prominent contemporary artist is generally going to turn out to be a one-off entry in BMW’s Art Car series, the automaker’s nearly fifty-year-long hat-tipping to the world of fine art.

But this one is not. The 8-Series, which has been given a going-over by Jeff Koons, is actually a limited-production variant, and will be made in a 99-example run. Its official title is the 8 X JEFF KOONS. It follows the JEFF KOONS X, another 8-Series released in 2021.

The result embodies a somewhat more complex finishing process than the standard production BMW. The variant’s exterior design uses 11 colors, and takes 200 hours to complete; the interior sport seats are in bright red and blue—the colors of BMW’s M performance division, and also colors that frequently are used to describe comic book superheroes.

But the 99 examples are intended to be driven. Beneath its colorful skin, the KOONS 8-Series car is the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe, which is powered by BMW’s 4.4L V8 biturbo. Two will be finished every week until production completes. The variant is priced at $350K.

Truth be told, Koons has already done his bit for the Art Car cause; the M3 GT2 Jeff Koons was introduced back in 2010, and competed at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
