Actor Simu Liu purchased an expressive newer contemporary in Los Angeles this fall. The acquisition required an outlay of $5 million from the former stuntman, but gave him a particularly flashy 4,769 sq. ft. perch in Hollywood Hills.

The house originally went up in 1974, but extensive renovations have transformed it. As it now stands, its exterior is visually engaging and icily atmospheric, with dark-stained plank accents against concrete with strategic lighting enhancing a first impression. The home’s entry is given an imposing flourish of monolithic intersection and varied texture.

Inside the home, a fair amount of reclaimed timber comes into view—there’s a lot of hardwood period, which warms up the living style and gives definition to the wide open quality of the shared spaces. Texture is ornament in a home like this, and wood grain, masonry, and natural stone all appear as the first level transitions to the upper floor.

The master’s on the first level, though, and features sliding glass opening onto the pool area. The 3-acre lot occupies a corner location, and is decked out with a BBQ area, fire pit, and thirst-resistant landscaping.

Liu starred in summer blockbuster Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings; the film grossed over $430 million at the box office.
