Mercedes-Benz EQS Posts Commendable 350-Mile EPA Range Rating

Mercedes-Benz revealed range information for its all-electric luxury performance sedan recently. The EQS will allow for 350 miles of travel — employing the EPA system — between charges, a solid performance which makes it a viable competitor if one’s willing to compare it to the Porsche Taycan, the Audi e-tron GT, and Tesla’s Model S. The Lucid Air Dream Edition R bests the EQS’s range number by a long sight, but comes at a 60% premium over the EQS’s $102K base sticker.

In the world of electrics—at least for now—higher speeds translate to slightly lower range, and the EQS lineup’s 450+ fares 10 miles-per-charge better than the speedier 580 4MATIC and its bigger battery pack and dual-motor powertrain.

The EQS 450+’s 329 horsepower and 419 pound-feet of torque gives it a 0-60 time of 5.9 seconds; the 580 4MATIC’s 516 HP and 631 lb-ft of torque get it to 60 in 4.1 seconds. Both EQS variants have an electronically-limited top speed of 130 MPH.

Of course, Europe has its own range-rating system, the WLTP. The numbers provided by the WLTP are consistently higher than the EPA’s, and considered to be nearer to real-world performance figures. The WLTP rating for the 2022 EQS 450+ is 487 miles, which happens to be very close to that of the more powerful Mercedes-AMG EQS 53.
