Mercedes gave the world a peek into the 2022 model year this summer when it revealed the company’s newest hybrid: the AMG GT 63 S E Performance. The model promises much to the serious driver shopping the top of the range; its powertrain produces 831 horsepower and 1082 pound-feet of torque, enough to get it to 62 MPH in 2.9 seconds, and to 124 MPH in under 10 seconds, a better performance than the non-hybrid GT 63 S.
The GT 63 S E Performance is a model that heralds substantive change for the sport division. It is the first plug-in to emerge from AMG, and it spearheads a PHEV lineup from the specialty subsidiary which is predicted to unfold over the next few years.
The GT 63 S E Performance is outfitted with AMG’s 4.0L V8 biturbo. A single permanent-magnet synchronous AC motor is dedicated to the rear axle, along with a 4.8-kWh battery pack; the electric component of the powertrain adds 94 horsepower on a continuous basis, or a 201-HP boost for up to ten seconds at a time. The hybrid model adds two drive modes to the non-hybrid’s five to access the car’s electric efficiency.
The model will come with AMG’s 4MATIC+ system and nine-speed automatic gearbox. Other mechanical treats include the air spring suspension with electronically-controlled adaptive dampers also sported by the GT 63 S, an electronically-controlled limited-slip differential, and carbon-ceramic brakes.
Pricing hasn’t yet been announced. The 2021 GT 63 S base stickers at $161,900.
