McLaren 765LT Spider Renders the Wildly Alluring Supercar in Drop-Top Guise

McLaren revealed its newest long-tail this summer, and a propos of the season it’s a drop-top. The newest version of the 765LT — itself introduced last year — is a Spider variant, and in keeping with McLaren’s no-stop-unpulled, track-oriented, barely street-legal sensibility, its super-efficient 4.0l V8 can deliver up to 755 horsepower.

Like the fixed hard-top 765LT, the retractable hard-top convertible can reach a top speed of 205 MPH before it’s tapped out. Music to the ears of envelope-pushers out there, and enhanced by the 765LT’s titanium exhaust; McLaren describes the system sound as ‘quadrophonic’, a good thing as a stereo, along with air conditioning, has been foregone in favor of the car’s newly-designed top and overall power-to-weight ratio (you can opt to add them back at no extra cost). The top can be raised or lowered in 11 seconds at speeds of up to 31 MPH.

Much of the rest of the 765LT makes the transition to the drop-top, of course, including the high-performance fuel pump, competition seats, and carbon fiber-heavy lightweight build: the Spider gains just 108 pound over the hard top’s 2,952 pound curb weight. The Spider can hit 60 MPH in 2.7 seconds, and 124 in 7.2.

Unlike the hard-top 765LT, the Spider variant will only be around for a short time. McLaren is planning to produce just 765 examples before calling it a day. Summer is short; tempus fugit. $382,500 will take the fugit out of the tempus, at least temporarily, and replace it with a four-wheeled material object of the most fleeting sort.
