Billionaire Eli Broad’s Malibu Architectural Listed for $58.5M After Sizable Price Chop

The Richard Meier-designed trophy home of art-loving billionaire Eli Broad is back this spring. Broad, who just passed away last week, initially listed the property a little more than a year ago, in March 2020; at that time, it was marketed with a $75 million ask. A second price cut—the first was levied last September—finds the recently relisted property asking just $58.5 million.

The house was custom-built for its late owner, but the relationship of Broad and Meier reaches back a bit further; in the early 2000s, Meier designed the Eli & Edythe Broad Art Center at UCLA, an overhaul of the existing Dickson Art Center, which had been damaged in 1994. The building opened in 2006.

The Malibu house is a frequently dazzling amalgam of glass, metallic surface and modern line, although it appears to hint at streamline here and there; perhaps it was intended to be a recapitulation and/or homage to Los Angeles-area modern architecture.

Whatever the intentions of the architect, the home is something of a museum in and of itself, which isn’t terribly surprising; the Broads have championed fine art in L.A. and beyond, and their extravagant philanthropic gestures include contributing hugely to the Zaha Hadid-designed MSU Broad in Michigan. The couple’s art collection is valued in the neighborhood of $2 billion.

The property features 105 feet of frontage on Carbon Beach. It was designed with a companion guest house.

Broad’s net worth was in the neighborhood of $7 billion.
