Anthony Russo—one half of writer-director-producer team the Russo Brothers, whose latest film is this year’s feature Cherry—is selling his architecturally significant home in Pasadena this spring.
The home is known as the Cordelia Culbertson House, and it was built in 1911 by a brother-and-brother team from another mother: Pasadena architects Charles and Henry Greene. The distinctly early-20th century cosmopolitanism of the design mixes in European design elements, and some Asian as well; check out the front entrance and green-tiled roof. Suitably dignified and somewhat austerely individualist from the street, in back it blooms into a lush living style of walkways and landscaping.
The home’s exterior is gunite. Its U-shaped footprint enclosed a large courtyard. The architecture works with its hillside location; it appears to be single-story from the street, and its ground-level garden area gradually transitions to upper-level terrace overlook.
Inside the home, details include original light fixtures, original hardwood floors—herringbone pattern oak and, in the kitchen, what appears to be maple plank—and original fireplaces, with the dining room’s a standout. Exceptional individual spaces include the ballroom, which features a carved wood wet bar, window designs that seem to evoke a Southwestern motif, and fold-away glass doors that open onto the courtyard.
According to public records, Russo purchased the property in late 2018, for $5.8 million.
The Russo brothers’ upcoming projects include The Gray Man, with Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Wagner Moura, Regé-Jean Page, and Billy Bob Thornton.
