Russell Simmons Lists Manhattan Penhouse for $5.5M

In the high summer of 2018, fashion designer and Def Jam Recordings co-founder Russell Simmons listed his Spanish-style hideaway in Hollywood Hills West for $8.3 million. Simmons didn’t have to wait very long to see the house through closing; the property sold for $8.1 million in a little over a month.

Simmons is taking another shot at selling his co-op penthouse unit in Manhattan. The unit hit the market in the spring of 2018 at $9.925 million, with a price cut—of over three million dollars—coming last year. The five-bedroom property was relisted this month at $5.5 million.

The 7,200 sq. ft. duplex unit features a singular floating staircase as a centerpiece—something of a feat of engineering, and a graceful element that draws the eye as surely as the barrel-vaulted ceilings. Renovations conducted during Simmons’ tenure of ownership include a cooler treatment, with neutrals prominent in the shared living spaces and master bedroom. The kitchen appears to have retained its original warmth, with green stone countertops and backsplashes offing contrast and depth.

The unit’s outdoor living area: 3,500 sq. ft. of terrace space that can be accessed from the upper floor via a spiral staircase.
