Matt Lauer Asking $44M for Hamptons Home He Bought From Richard Gere

Strongheart Manor returns to the Long Island market this summer. The property that was, at one time, the East Coast getaway of actor Richard Gere—and which is currently owned by former ‘Today’ show host Matt Lauer—is asking $43.995 million this time around.

Lauer has owned the property since 2016, when he purchased it from Gere. Lauer first listed it in June of last year. At that time, he was asking $44.8 million. Gere had floated a price around the mid-60 million-dollar mark, but went through three years of marketing the place without an acceptable offer.

The estate is situated in a particularly sylvan corner of the Hamptons. The grounds extend to well over six acres, and are landscaped in that idyllic, timeless Long Island style. Lawns, gardens, slate walking paths and patios, a vine-covered arbor, a small pond and a screened gazebo are elements of the romantic estate design.

The main house was built in 1902, in the inimitably and wonderfully eccentric style of the era. It measures about 6,600 sq. ft. The interiors are carefully composed as refined but summertime-cottage casual—in the context of a fifty million-dollar property, that is.

But there are two additional residences on the property, and interior living areas measure 14,000 sq. ft. in all. One of the homes is a four bedroom, the other a two. A Gunite pool, a sports court, and 300 feet of frontage on Shelter Island Sound with a 140-foot dock complete a cursory look at this unique and extremely desirable estate.
