For 2021, the Maserati Ghibli will come with the option of a mild hybrid drivetrain. The 48-volt system represents the first of its kind for the Italian maker of exotics.

When the mild hybrid system is optioned, the 2L 4-cylinder engine is augmented with a generator as a starter. That’s familiar territory for anyone familiar with 48-volt systems. But Maserati, being Maserati, also added an electric component that functions as a booster. All told, the power produced is about 330 horsepower. The e-Ghibli can hit 62 in 5.7 seconds on its way to a top speed of 159 MPH.

The electrified Ghibli comes with a few cosmetic flourishes to distinguish it from its ICE brethren. The most obvious change is the grille; the gasoline-burning Ghibli features blackened longitudinal rails instead of chrome. Cabin tech includes a new instrument cluster, which may well also be featured on the facelifted gas-only Ghibli for next year.
