Of the many models Mercedes took to the Los Angeles Auto Show this year, one stood out for sheer brash size and power: the 2020 GLS 63. It was unveiled beside the performance-oriented GLE 63 S, presenting well-heeled tire-kickers with options for thrilling daily driving and plush 7-passenger cushiness. Today we’ll check out the latter.

For 2021, the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 looks bigger than ever. 23” monoblocks raise the vehicle up to an imperious level, lording over fellow cars on the highway, and really emphasizing the bulk. Big as it is, it’s nimble; even though it’s not as quick as the GLE, it’s pretty darn close.

Believe it or not, this massive pile of crypto-military sensibilities and living room-on-wheels proportions can hit 60 MPH in 4.1 seconds. AMG squeezed every ounce of juice out of its M17X-series 4L V8, working 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque out of it, enough to take it to a top speed of 174. Like the GLE, the GLS features a 48-volt generator in place of the starter; in both models, it adds 21 horsepower to the rating for brief bursts. And it features the same 9-speed auto gearbox.

The interior of the GLS is as roomy as one might imagine. Like the GLE, its dash shows off a pair of 12.3” screens, one for instruments, and one for the infotainment system. MBUX voice recognition is standard, as is the 64-color LED ambient lighting system.

If you’re enamored, you won’t have too long to wait. The new SUV is due in U.S. dealerships next summer. And if you’re easily tempted, definitely don’t check out the Mercedes-Maybach GLS.
