Jenny Craig Takes $22M for Del Mar Beachfront Home

It took five years, but weight-loss guru and businesswoman Jenny Craig finally sold her longtime home in Del Mar, California. Ms. Craig accepted an offer of $22 million for the extravagant beachfront residence; when the property hit the open market in 2014, it was asking $39.5 million—over ten times what she paid for it in the mid-1980s.

The five-bedroom house dates to 1980, and sits behind a privacy wall on three-quarters of an acre. It is designed around a courtyard-like pool and patio area; the exterior architecture is a little clunky, but relieved by the transparency of its glass walls.

The 7,625 square feet of interiors boast a warm and beach cottage-casual living style. A mix of contemporary and earthier rusticity strikes the eye, as LED accent lighting in the living room concept ceiling combines with the glazed green tile of the master bedroom’s fireplace. Terra-cotta tile is used as flooring throughout the common areas, and tongue-in-groove features heavily as a ceiling material. All told, the living style is beachy, warm, and inviting.

The terra-cotta tile extends to the courtyard, where a pool, spa, outdoor lounge, and colonnade figure prominently. The outdoor space is augmented with a beachside terrace, and a private second-floor balcony off the master.

Ms. Craig and her husband brought their fledgling weight-loss business to the U.S. in 1985—a year before they bought this house. In and of itself, that brief chronology is telling.
