It took about a year, but Travis Kalanick’s purchase of one of two penthouses in the recently completed Renzo Piano-designed luxury high rise 565 Broome, a.k.a. the ‘Soho Tower’, finalized late this summer. The condo was listed for $40.5 million in April of last year; Kalanick purchased the unit—‘Penthouse North’—for $36 million.

Last year, when news of the Uber co-founder’s purchase first hit the news, 565 Broome was still under construction. It had been a mainstay in the press at that time for two reasons. One concerned the building’s architect and architecture—in that order—and the other concerned its peculiar location…beside the Holland Tunnel.

The layout of Kalanick’s new duplex penthouse includes a large great room which rises a full two floors; its floor-to-ceiling glass enhances the impressive sense of scale and allows stunning views of the city.

There are four bedrooms and 4.5 baths in the penthouse’s roughly 6,700 square feet, including a massive master suite. The kitchen is decked out with Molteni cabinets. The 2,500 square-foot terrace is splendid, offering a heated pool and a lounge.

Kalanick resigned from Uber in 2017. His net worth is in the neighborhood of $6 billion.
