Sidney Kimmel may have sold Johnny Carson’s magnificent 70’s anachronism in Malibu this summer for $40 million, but he hasn’t yet been able to find a buyer for his opulent penthouse in the Ritz-Carlton Residences on the other coast. The billionaire producer and investor listed the unit in the Emory Roth-designed building in December of last year, asking $39.5 million.
Well, perhaps a 25% price cut will help Kimmel find the right buyer. The property is now listed at $29.5 million. That’s awfully close to the $29 million Kimmel paid for the place himself when he took ownership nearly two decades ago.
The penthouse occupies the 27th floor of the building; of the considerable interior square footage, the single bedroom suite occupies 2,000 square feet of an available 7,000. It’s an unusual layout; that lone suite is designed as a true sanctuary, and contains an office with a barrel ceiling, sitting and dressing rooms, his and hers baths, and an extravagant walk-in closet.
The rest of the unit unfolds as a mansion in the sky. The entrance gallery features inlaid floors, deco ceiling fixtures, and carved wood doors. The living room boasts a French-style marble fireplace. The dining room is exceedingly formal, and positioned on a corner for combination city and park views.
The property’s exterior living area is unusually expansive: 1,000 square feet of terraces that wrap around three sides of the penthouse.
Kimmel’s net worth is north of $1 billion.
