Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen List Picture-Perfect Massachusetts Estate for a Deep-Pocketed $39.5M

Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen have listed their custom-built house in the upscale Boston suburb of Brookline. The estate hit the open market this week.

The property—one of the crown jewels in the greater Boston area—is listed at a stout $39.5 million. At that price, it does have stiff competition for the be all and end all estate in the neighborhood: a home a few blocks away that listed late last year at $90 million is now priced at $38 million, and is considerably larger, and on a larger lot.

But the Bundchen-Brady collective does have an ace in the hole where their 2015-built beauty is concerned: their house is far more interesting. It was designed by L.A.-area starchitect Richard Landry. Landry’s homes are grandiose and generally emphasize a kind of pastiche-driven dazzle above all other considerations. They are also exceedingly well-built, with spectacular interior flow, and they can be quite beautiful.

This example of Landry’s work reveals an exterior that riffs on East Coast manor style houses of the industrial age; it bears a languishing, luxurious eccentricity in its lushly varied embellishments—host of chimneys, varied roofline, and variety of window shapes. It is dressed in a formal layer of red brick that is foreshadowed in the motor court, and the abundance of that warm tone against the riotous cool of seasonal green presents a classic contrast that never goes out of style. The entryway contradicts expectations with a calligraphic sweeping flourish that suggests graceful motion and marks the home as definitively individual.

Within, the 5-bed house ticks quite a few boxes on the tastefully upscale assessment form. Not-too-warm hardwood, whitewashed brick, a series of unusual ceiling fixtures, and exposed timber make for a classily reticent execution, and plain black steel window and French doors revealing the expansive grounds: over five acres of rolling, semi-forested suburban escapism situated only a few miles from Copley Square.
