The ever-popular BMW X6 is looking more muscular. The second-gen crossover model—which has sold very well since its introduction for the 2015 model year—is now built on the CLAR platform. It now rides a bit higher, and boasts a more dramatic fastback roof and hood. The nose is far more aggressive than the outgoing model, too, with bigger grilles making for a more imposing fascia.
The engines available are all potent; the entry-level 40i variants boast a 3L V6 with a twin-scroll turbo that’ll produce 335 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. The sDrive40i can reach 60 MPH in 5.2 seconds, with the xDrive40i coming in a tenth of a second behind. Move up to the M50i variant, though, and you’re driving with a 4.4L V8 that pumps out 523 HP and 553 lb-ft of torque; the M50i can get to 60 in 4.1 seconds on its way to an electronically limited top speed of 155 MPH.
The new tech includes version 7 of Live Cockpit with iDrive, controlled by a 12.3” touchscreen; the new instrument cluster also measures in at 12.3 inches. Active Driving Assistant, collision warning system, and blind-spot detection are standard safety tech features. Optional safety tech includes lane assist features. And options generally extend from cosmetic flourishes like backlit kidney grilles to an off-road package for the xDrive40i.
Base sticker for the 2020 X6 is about $65K. Deliveries begin late in the fall.
