Move aside, oh-so-famous “Water Lilies,” Claude Monet’s oil painting “Haystack” just sold at a Sotheby’s New York auction for $110.7 million.

Painted in 1890, the work is part of Monet’s Meules (Haystacks) series featuring idyllic scenes of daily life in rural Normandy. The French artist’s Meules collection includes 24 other works. Monet painted them at varying times of day, and across all seasons; together, they represent a complex view of a place, and offer a window into French agrarian culture at the close of the 19th century.

The last time this painting hit the auction block was back in 1986; it sold for $2 million. Prior to its mid-’80s sale, it belonged to one family for nearly 100 years. That buyer acquired it directly from Monet’s dealer. 

Monet’s moody and colorful “Haystack” is the ninth-most expensive painting to ever sell at auction.
