This month, Mini announced a power boost for 2020 models. Lovers of the diminutive statement ride will be happy to hear that both the 2020 Mini John Cooper Works Clubman and Countryman will come with powerful 300-horsepower engines.

We already knew the Mini John Cooper Works GP would feature this engine. But the Clubman and Countryman getting the treatment is surprising news; Mini hadn’t indicated as much up until now. The response to the GP must’ve demanded the change.

Both of the models will carry the updated 2.0-liter inline-four engine, which produces 301 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque. In order to support the increased power output, the vehicles received new pistons and rods, and a stronger crankshaft.

Both models have reduced their zero-to-60 mph times; the Clubman to 4.9 seconds, and the Countryman to 5.1. They’re apparently fast as well as quick: the Mini variants are also now electrically limited to a max speed of 155 mph.

For the most part, 2020 updates concentrated on power production and engine changes. But a few cosmetic enhancements sneak in, including a new grille insert and Union Jack taillights on the Clubman.

Details regarding pricing are forthcoming.
