Aston’s first all-EV is here. And it’s awfully fetching.
Yes, the slick-looking fastback has lost its V12. But Aston has of course made sure that you’ll only miss the ICE during fits of nostalgia; a massive, 800V custom-designed electrical architecture fills the void very well; the battery array produces a whopping 65kWh.
That’s a lot of juice, so technological progress in this case has its demonstrable consolations: this Rapide is the most potent yet, with 950Nm of torque and 612 Euro-horses on tap—enough to make the jump from 50 MPH to 70 in 1.5 seconds. The car can make the 0-60 leap in less than 4 seconds on its way to a top speed of 155. Range is 200 miles, and the system can accomplish an over 90% refresh in an hour with a 400V, 50kW charger.
The Rapide E’s two electric motors push through a limited-slip differential; spring and damper rates have been adjusted to compensate for the dramatically altered powertrain design. The exterior has seen a bit of aero improvement, and specially-designed aluminum wheels add efficiency and cooling.
The exterior is lovely; a long-ish nose with discreetly angled LED headlamps is combined with an almost absurdly raked windscreen tapering into an extremely low profile. The car’s cabin is classic Aston. Digital instruments, logical controls, a fair amount of carbon-fiber trim are evident; the example used for the shoot is adorned in black leather with blue accent stitching.
Only 155 examples of the EV Rapide will be produced; the car is essentially Aston’s all-electric emissary, paving the way for Lagonda models to come…a bit further on up the road.
