Oaktree Capital co-founder Bruce Karsh sold his estate in Los Angeles this week, but the investor all but broke even when the dust settled: he picked up the extremely formal Georgian-style in Brentwood in 2014 for $33.7 million, and passed it on this month for $33.5 million.

The gated property has a pleasing forested feel from the start; the pilasters at the street entrance are ivy-clad, and the lengthy drive is lined with various mature trees; the driveway culminates in an ornate inlaid motor court, with lush, mature trees and shrubs framing the home’s symmetrical façade.

The 8,617 square-foot home dates to 1940. The foyer, the circular antechamber crowned with a skylight and lined with decorative wall niches, decorative columns, crown moldings, and marble tile floors are formal touches that indicate arrival; the built-ins, fireplaces, gently curing staircase and interior/exterior flow all suggest relaxed and casual.

The green tones that are used here and there echo the marvelously verdant property itself, though, making for a fairly profound sense of connection between house and grounds. The kitchen is easygoing and inviting, and the half-solarium dayroom is lovely.

The six bedrooms and ten baths culminate in a master suite that’s a true beauty: a fireplace and a sitting area give it coziness and expanse, and multiple sets of French doors offer egress to a second-floor terrace and a Juliet balcony.

The two-acre property boasts a stone reflecting pool, gardens, a pavilion, a swimming pool, a racquetball court, and a studio among other amenities.

Karsh has donated generously in support of education, including over $100 million to Duke University and $50 million to the University of Virginia School of Law. His net worth is north of $2 billion.
