Ford subsidiary Lincoln is bringing back the Aviator. The prodigal SUV made its official grand re-debut this past week at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Those who saw the concept at the New York Auto Show earlier this year will be happy to hear that the production model is very similar in appearance. In place of boxier builds seen from other brands, the 2020 Aviator is quite streamlined, and leaner than it’s big brother, the Navigator. As its name implies, the model was inspired by flight, and manages to voice both crossover and SUV design language quite well.

The Aviator remains traditional up front; the fascia culminates in an upright grille, and from this angle the Aviator looks typically Lincoln. But the roofline tapers gracefully but forcefully toward the rear. The vehicle interior manages up to seven seats divided among three rows, making the Aviator a more family-friendly option for the owner on more of a budget who wants to still step up from the Nautilus. Comfort and tech are paramount in the model, with the ‘Lincoln Way’ app merging these luxury concerns and making startup cellphone-operable.

Customers will be able to select from both gasoline and plug-in hybrid powertrain options. For those who opt for the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6, they can expect to enjoy 400 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. The top-of-the-line Grand Touring plug-in hybrid uses its additional electric oomph for a total power production of 450 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque.

The updated 2020 Lincoln Aviator is scheduled to hit U.S. streets in 2019.
