Mariska Hargitay Looking to Break Even on Elegant Manhattan Townhouse

A Manhattan townhome owned by Law & Order star Mariska Hargitay has surfaced on the open market. The residence dates to 1900, but presently offers a uniquely artistic spin on contemporary, and a design voice which is all its own.

Hargitay picked up the period piece during the summer of 2012, spending $10.7 million to call it home. This month she and husband Peter Hermann listed the property for $10.75 million; the couple doesn’t want the home to languish on the market, apparently.

Prior to Hargitay’s purchase, the residence offered a living style of clean, uncluttered optimism, with natural-finished hardwood floors and staircase, off-white walls and ceilings, and steel-framed windows. As it currently stands, the home utilizes color in daring ways which work well when viewed as a composition; the vibrant blue, yellow, and red accumulate into a cohesive, artistic vision that is sophisticated but playful.

The home begins with a winning contrast: a set of front doors that are almost piano black opens onto blue stone tiles. In the back of the garden floor, oversized steel-framed casement windows enlighten, and French doors open onto a flagstone patio surrounded by hardwood privacy walls. The kitchen has been revised using a pretty daring shade of yellow.

From there, the home develops throughout its nearly 7,000 square feet of living space. It culminates in a top floor penthouse with terraces flanking a central den.
