This month, Ferrari rolled out a new model and series, and the new home of its naturally aspirated V12 engine designs. The model to bring it all together is the Monza, variants SP1 and SP2, and the series name is Icona. The first entries in the series, the Monza SP1 and 2 are just the first shot in a campaign to return the Prancing Horse to its racing roots in the 1950’s.
And, yes, the very limited-edition, collectible Monza cars will be graced with a growling and frisson-inducing naturally aspirated V12. Ferrari claims the newly designed engine is the most powerful in the history of the company, and its 798 of horsepower and 530 pound-feet of torque will get it to 62 MPH in 2.9 seconds. Ferrari was quick to add that the models are designed to be track cars, and are not legal for road use.
SP1 and SP2 are seating designations, and do not appear to indicate a feature-oriented hierarchy. The SP1 is a classic one-seat racer, while the SP2 makes room for a passenger. The windshield-free design is something Ferrari is calling a ‘virtual’ windshield, a dual-cowl design to create a natural air pocket in the driver’s seat. Goggles and scarf may be required.
Bottom line? The Monza is almost impossibly beautiful. At once history-evoking and contemporary, sculptural, and minimalist, the model might be the most spectacular Ferrari of the century.
