BMW Mounts a Major Assault on Competitors With the Stunning 8-Series Coupe

It’s been just over a year since BMW gave us a gander at the concept coupe representing the rebirth of the 8 Series. The concept was revealed officially at last year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, and raised more than a few eyebrows. It wasn’t only because it indicated a return to form of the kind of car BMW is capable of designing and building when they’re interested in making a serious piece of driving equipment. It was because the coupe’s lines coalesced into that ideal of sports car design which reconciles charm and tempestuousness. In short, it was beautiful.

A year later gets us a gander at the production 8 Series coupe, and for the most part the finished product keeps to the concept’s successful automotive poetics. The nose has been flattened somewhat, and the front bumper is more prominent; in that way, the car has been brought into line with contemporary BMW M Series language cues. Side/rear glass has been clipped a little as well, and the LED headlamps are fixed and very narrow.

Power comes from a newly designed 4.4L V8 with a pair of twin-scroll turbos; the engine produces 523 HP and 553 pound-feet of torque, and is connected to an 8-speed Steptronic Sport gearbox. Drive presets include Sport, Sport+, Comfort (touring), and Ecological modes.

Cabin features include a full head-up display, night vision system, and a suite of driver assistance features. The 8 Series coupe will also be connected via the BMW app, with digital key for remote security.

No word as of now on the price. But the model will be available late this year.
