Oprah Winfrey Spends $8.3M on Sprawling Retreat in Washington State

Oprah Winfrey will have a pleasant place to vacation this summer. The power-broker and talk-show fixture picked up a marvelous getaway estate in Washington State toward the tail end of last month, spending $8.28 million to take possession of the 40-acre waterfront property on Orcas Island. Orcas is part of the San Juan Islands, off the northern coast of the state.

The estate is inflected with mission and craftsman design cues that begin with the pilasters and gates at the property’s entrance. The exterior of the main house uses stone, raw timber, and soft red accents against moss green paint. The roof is copper and slate. All told, it is a sensitively executed house. It was designed to complement, and be enhanced by, its lushly sylvan landscape.

The interiors are as rustic as expected; maybe more so. The common living areas use reclaimed wood, a great deal of pine, and open trussed ceilings over an open concept to express the lifestyle as filled with breathing room and potential. The house dates to 2007, though, so updates and creature comforts include radiant heated floors.

The property exterior, though, is a thoroughgoing knockout. Landscaping takes best advantage of the available stone and flora, working it into a relaxation-inducing amalgam of traditional American country estate, Asian meditation garden, and waterfront sanctuary.

Ms. Winfrey’s position of talk-show queen of America has remained intact since the mid-1980s.
