Land Rover is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the classic Defender with a powerful new build: the Land Rover Defender Works V8.

The British automaker will offer only 150 examples of the most powerful Defender yet. Each limited-edition example will pack Land Rover’s 5.0-liter V-8 engine, in honor of the Series III Stage 1 V8 powerhouse used from 1979 models forward.

Of course, this special edition isn’t like any Land Rover before it, and tuning is part of the appeal. The Works is the fastest Defender ever produced, with 399 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque produced by the naturally aspirated engine. This output marks a huge increase over the standard Defender’s production of 120 hp and 266 lb-ft.

All that power results in a zero-to-60 leap of 5.6 seconds, and a top speed of 106 mph; more importantly, it’s there when needed during off-road excursions. The engine is paired with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission equipped with Sport mode. And a host of upgraded components support the added juice: a new handling kit, brakes, dampers, and anti-roll bars grace the Works model.

The special features aren’t exclusively under the hood, either. Each example also boasts a cosmetic suite including a black grille, roof, and wheel arches, and aluminum door handles. The cabin’s infotainment system, leather upholstery, and Recaro sport seats indicate JLR packs luxe inside the utilitarian.

Available currently in the U.K., the model will reach U.S. shores, with pricing for the model starting at $212,554.50. Land Rover is also set to launch its new Defender across the pond later this year.
