The new Mercedes-Benz AMG models keep looking better and better. In Detroit this week, the company leveled its newest salvo in the imported luxury car wars: the AMG 53 Series. The cars sport the astonishingly refined beauty of contemporary AMG designs, and hybrid drivetrains as well.

The drivetrain for the lineup features a 3L inline six-cylinder turbocharged engine; the 429 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque are bolstered by an electric boost that provides an additional 184 lb-ft of torque and 21 horsepower at launch. Of course, in good hybrid fashion, deceleration recharges the onboard 48-volt system. The electric motor also acts as starter and alternator; it is known as EQ Boost, and it’s located between the engine and transmission. The system also involves a second turbocharger in the 53 series, which negates lag-time by giving the drivetrain immediate thrust.

The 53 Series cars receive the nine-speed automatic gearbox that graces the E63. The CLS 53 cars also get AMG’s revised 4matic+ AWD system. The Series’ 0-60 time clocks at 4.4 seconds on average, with the Cabriolet bringing up the rear at 4.5 seconds; that’s significantly slower than the E63, but not enough for most drivers to worry about. The E53 Series are all limited to a top speed of 130 MPH.

E53 model interiors are as well-considered and engineered for fluidity as their exteriors; throughout is an artful effortlessness. Inside the cabin, this translates to a simplicity and logic that is incredibly appealing, and not only because of the Energizing Comfort Control.
