Mercedes unveiled the third generation of its sleek CLS coupe at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week. The powers that be at the German automaker’s top floor declined to make very many substantive changes to the lines of the model. The third generation’s lines at the back of the car gain a little softness, and that’s all a cursory look reveals. But, that’s all well and good. The CLS shape doesn’t need many changes to still be a knockout, and it still carries plenty of weight as an up-to-date statement.
Like its elder sibling, the new CLS favors the arch over the crease, with a heady sense of consistency and grace. The lines of the car manage to be both understated and romantic, which is a tricky design combination if ever there was one; as a result, its masculine sense of purpose is balanced out with a great deal of feminine charm. This is a sports coupe for all seasons, and all buyers, too. A neat trick, but an old story for Mercedes-Benz.
The 2019 CLS does get a bump in power, however. There’s a new heart pumping under the hood, an inline 3L 6-cylinder that gets a little electronic assist this time around. The combined sources of power produce 383 HP.
The new CLS also makes more efficient use of its interior, allowing a fifth passenger in the third generation of the model. Options include a dual display, and Mercedes’ Energizing Comfort system, which aligns climate, lighting, fragrance and music for a spa-on-wheels treatment.
The 2019 CLS will be available in the autumn of 2018.
