The last known privately owned painting from famed Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci has just sold at auction for a record-annihilating $450.3 million.

da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi was expected to garner a lot of interest at the Christie’s New York auction, but the final sale price soared beyond even the most liberal expectations, making it the most expensive art piece sold at auction.

The Italian artist’s strangely evocative portrayal dates to 1500. The bidder remains anonymous. It was last consigned in 2013 by Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev and was presented as one of just 58 classic works as part of Christie’s postwar and contemporary art sale.

Salvator Mundi’s sale price is more than double that of what is now the second most expensive painting ever sold: Les Femmes d’Alger, by Picasso. That painting sold in 2015 for a then record-shattering $179.4 million.
