Dutch designer Rein van der Mast has introduced a striking new addition to the desk set of the discriminating executive.

At nearly $17,000, the Spica Virginis fountain pen is the world’s first solid gold, 3D-printed writing utensil. Mast utilized the latest in 3D printing technology to craft the delicately, intricately detailed fountain pen.

The Spica Virginis takes its name from the brightest star in Virgo, otherwise known as the ‘virgin’s spikelet’; hence, the 18-karat gold pen was designed to look like an ear of grain, suggesting a double entendre of abundance. While the traditional gold example is especially fitting for the design subject, the striking utensil is also available in white gold. Both options boast the same striking latticework, which was achieved through the unique three-dimensional printing process, and defines the pen right down to the nib.

Mast also offers silver and 24K coated titanium examples of the Spica Virginis. The yellow and white gold versions are available for $16,618, while the gold-plated titanium model is priced at $5,755.95. Customers can also opt for a plain titanium edition for $2,889.17.
