Another indication that your morning commute may soon become far more interesting: the DeLorean Aerospace company has joined the competition in a burgeoning field, and introduced a new flying car prototype that may help make aero-commuting a reality sooner than you think. It won’t be powered by a ‘Mr. Fusion,’ but it will be a zero-emission vehicle.

DeLorean Aerospace has been hard at work on the new DR-7 Flying Car Prototype since 2012. The vehicle is a two-person VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft that utilizes ducted lift/propulsion fans. Since the vehicle is controlled by an autonomous flight control system, it doesn’t even need a trained pilot to operate it.

The DR-7 is so lightweight and compact that, with foldable wings, it can even fit in a home garage or regular parking spot.

The 360-degree thrust-vectoring electric ducted-fan nacelles are designed to offer better stability and performance. Those fans push the electric powertrain to a top speed of 240 mph with a cruising speed of 150 mph.

DeLorean was created by Paul DeLorean, who is the nephew of John DeLorean, the man responsible for the company that built the iconic DMC-12 stainless-bodied vehicle from the “Back to the Future” franchise.

The DR-7 is certainly a step in the right direction of high-tech transportation and is expected to fly by the end of next year. Uber’s ambitious Dubai fleet project could be off the ground in 2020, so we could see the flying car as a travel option sooner than we think.
