Billionaire David Rockefeller’s Idyllic Maine Coastal Estate on the Market for $19M

An estate owned by the late David Rockefeller—who passed away this spring—has appeared on the market. A New England getaway home, Rockefeller style, the property is located on a promontory in Seal Harbor, a fishing hamlet on Mount Desert Island off the coast of Maine. Mount Desert Island has long been revered by artists for its natural beauty, and is located at the edge of Frenchman Bay, near Acadia National Park.

Naturally, then, while the house in question is charming, the land and setting provide its purpose. The property extends to nearly fifteen acres. The pine-dotted property hugs the jagged granite coast, and is landscaped very much in the idyllic romantic style, an idealized vision of the natural world as a gateway to both mystery and the process of discovering meaning. This is a place to brush up on your Emerson.

The estate is called ‘Ringing Point’; it’s priced at a stout $19 million. The house is a seven bedroom, timber-clad affair, a 1970’s three-story designed by David Rockefeller’s wife Peggy, during her lifetime a noted horticulturalist. Views of the Bay are a constant, available as a point of reference from nearly every room in the house.

Floors are tile or hardwood, and walls are frequently clad in raw timber. The home’s fireplaces and kitchen countertops make use of local granite, as does the swimming pool on the property. In its design aesthetic and materials, the house is very evocative of its era, when back-to-the-land idealism and a sense of community and sensitivity to the natural world influenced home design.

Peggy Rockefeller established a rose garden in the New York Botanical Gardens, with her husband’s help; it appears he promised her one. She also developed her own rose. David Rockefeller was CEO and chairman of Chase Manhattan; his interests included philanthropy, and he donated hundreds of millions of dollars to educational and humanitarian organizations. His net worth was estimated at $3.3 billion at the time of his passing in March of this year.
