Baltimore Victorian of ‘House of Cards’ Fame to Hit the Auction Block Next Month

Those obsessed with the tragic Shakespearean manipulations and Venetian intrigues of the Netflix binge-watch phenom ‘House of Cards’ may want to take note of this Baltimore townhouse that just hit the market via an upcoming auction: it was used prominently as the exterior of Frank and Claire Underwood’s home in the first two seasons of the show.

Although the interiors of the home were not used as sets, the residence provided the inspiration for the sets which were constructed for the show; formal but understated, and exuding the sense of obligatory propriety which defines the professional and non-professional world of the Underwoods, the townhouse boasts some terrific historical features.

The property dates to 1880, and features a neoclassical façade with a pediment artifice; ideal for the show’s subtext.  The neoclassical influence is picked up inside in fireplaces and arches. Original hardwood runs throughout the home, much of it narrow-plank, giving those rooms that marvelous visual texture. A carved newel post and numerous sets of pocket door are finished hardwood that has been allowed to develop an evocative patina.

Ceilings throughout are 12’, and lighting is kept period or period-influenced. A ceiling medallion adds a considerable ornamental flourish to the living room, and is nicely paired with a limestone fireplace. The second floor kitchen—rendered as an open concept with the dayroom—features a massive brick cooking fireplace with huge hearth step. Kitchen and baths have been brought up-to-date with fairly recent remodels.

Bidding for the home will start at $500K, on the 27th of next month. The fourth season of Neflix’s potboiler reboot of ‘House of Cards’ premiered on the 30th of last month.
