A flip of a house once owned by Groucho Marx may remind some readers of the first number in ‘Animal Crackers’—Hello, I Must Be Going.

And going with a not-so-slight profit, too. The current owner, who purchased the home for a little less than $3.5 million last winter, recently tossed it back onto the market for $4.2 million.

The traditional-style house dates to the mid-1930’s, and was the Marx family’s residence for much of the 1940’s. Renovations have left their mark—most forcibly in the recessed and highlighted ceiling in the dining room—but much of the period charm has been retained.

Floors are original oak, which is dramatically grained; for the most part, the floors are plank, but the foyer and front hall features some nice herringbone work. Fireplaces in tile and marble, with hearth steps, add nice atmospheric flourishes from the era, while more contemporary ceiling light fixtures balance out the vintage charm with a bit of modernity.

The house measures 3,703 square feet, and contains four bedrooms and four baths, with the master suite on the second floor incorporated a powder room and a study or small office, as well as a balcony with French door access. The house also contains a wet bar, and a library.

The property exterior features a brick patio, with a brick pool accented with blue tile, a classic look that’s executed very well here. An elevated spa looks out over the gardens on the slightly less than quarter-acre lot.

Groucho and the rest of the fellas may be seen wreaking proto punk-rock mayhem onboard steamships, on college campuses, in opera houses, on aristocratic estates, and in health clinics and circuses throughout the 1930’s and 40’s.
