Inspired by clusters of fungi, Sawaya & Moroni‘s Mogu Chair makes quite the impression.

Designed by MAD founder Ma Yansong, the unique chair first made its debut at Milan design week. Its waved shape, and “cluster” appearance when multiple units are on display, sets it apart from even the wilder of Sawaya & Moroni’s pieces.

Undeniably inspired by the undulating shapes of mushrooms, the Mogu chair is supported by three stalk-like legs. And, yes, it was designed to appear like it organically rose up from the ground.

Even though the original design was created for a public art installation, with wood and resin options, the chair is both sculptural and functional. Utilizing several Mogu chairs at once, owners are able to create a completely unique arrangement.

“Its surface forms an organic landscape that allows people to respond with their bodies and encourage a variety of social interactions,” said Yansong.

Whether standing alone in a minimalist office, or presented as a cluster in a large, open space, the Mogu chair will stimulate social interaction. Which, for Yansong, is precisely the point.
