Audi took to the 2017 Shanghai motor show to reveal its new e-tron Sportback coupe-inspired electric SUV concept. The concept is designed to give the rest of the niche industry a run for its EV money, especially heavyweight Tesla.
The German automaker announced its first production e-tron model will hit sales floors in 2018, with Audi CEO Rupert Stadler calling the model “the first electric car in its competitive field that is fit for everyday use.”
Tesla’s Model S, incidentally, just saw a price reduction to under $70K base, and the company is trying to get its $35K Model 3 onto salesfloors to establish momentum in the entry-level EV marketplace. Enter Audi, in a rush.
Electronically speaking, the e-tron Sportback boasts a pair of rear-mounted motors and another motor upfront that makes 320kW in standard mode and up to 370kW in other drive modes, which is equivalent to 490 hp. It also still features Audi’s prime selling feature: Quattro drive.
The lighting technology on the e-tron Sportback is pretty impressive. Audi gave the model 500 individual LED lights surrounding the front grille. With these lights, Audi has given the model the ability to offer an array of lighting configurations, allowing far more illumination versatility than normal headlights.
Revealing the e-tron Sportback in China is no coincidence. Audi has promised the Chinese market five new e-tron models over the next five years as the country tries to combat its smog-veiled air. And, Chinese EV production is blossoming, too. No time to lose.
