A townhouse in Greenwich Village has come up for sale. The residence—which dates to the first half of the nineteenth century—is owned by actor Mitchell Lichtenstein, son of Roy Lichtenstein, and it has never been offered on the open market. Lichtenstein and Vincent Sanchez bought the property in the late 1990’s, for $2.5 million.

The Greek Revival townhouse was constructed in 1847, and measures a little more than 5,600 square feet of living space throughout its four floors. It contains four bedrooms and 3.5 baths.

The residence has been treated with rare deference and respect by its owners through the years; modern updates, such as they are, appear overtly only in the kitchen, dayroom, and foyer. Crown moldings, hardwood, or soapstone tile floors, and original fireplaces grace the interior. Bathrooms have been modernized, but with an eye to the historic.

Some of the details are extraordinary: the panoramic wallpaper in the dining room enhances the historic identity of the home, the period light fixtures, the French and pocket doors which provide compartmental privacy while enhancing the suggestion of flow.

The kitchen’s updates are confined to country-cottage cabinetry, a butcher-block island, and modern light fixtures. Subway tile and a soothing jade tone give the room its own identity in the house, but the effect doesn’t topple the overall composition.

The property’s garden floor includes a fairly spacious exterior patio, in brick, with stone planters, bench, fountain and table. There is a fourth-floor terrace off the main guest bedroom.

Mitchell Lichtenstein starred in Ang Lee’s ‘The Wedding Banquet’; he also auteured 2007’s ‘Teeth,’ a darkly delirious romp through the avenging feminine unconscious.
