A historic townhouse associated with a wild variety of famous folks has come up for sale in NYC’s Chelsea neighborhood. Dating to 1835, the building has seen ownership by celebrities as varied as Andrew Garfield and Courtney Love.

Currently, the five levels of 463 W. 20th Street are converted into apartments, but advocates of Chelsea history would like to see it purchased by a buyer dedicated to restoring it to its original significance as a single townhome. The re-conversion is expected to be fairly straightforward.

Restorations over the years have retained much of the building’s original charm; the thirteen original wood fireplaces are still useable, and its hefty mahogany doors are intact. Hardwood floors are all original. The period moldings, too, have withstood the march of time, and the hard eye of new buyers. Bathroom updates cohere tastefully with the historical weight which saturates the rooms. Exposed beams have occasionally been whitewashed, in order to brighten and expand a bit.

Kitchens are outfitted with high-end appliances, including Liebherr ovens and refrigerators, Miele dishwashers, and wine chillers. The building has been soundproofed. The roof features a garden and lounging space, with views of the Hudson.

The building has been home to many celebrities over the years, including Glenn Close, Jason Statham, and Emma Stone. It is priced at $20 million.
