‘All in the Family’ Producer Norman Lear Relists Brentwood Estate at $40M

Norman Lear is giving it another shot.

Around fourteen months after initially listing his Brentwood estate for $55 million, he’s reassessed the market and come down to an asking of $39.95 million. Lear and his wife, Lyn, purchased the home and much of the land in 1995, reportedly for around $6.5 million.

Hardly the usual overwrought Mediterranean villa, the lines of the home are cleanly unadorned, suggesting a whisper of modesty that is quickly dispelled by the sheer size of the home, and the expanse of the four-parcel property surrounding it, which measures out at nearly eleven acres.

The main house features seven bedrooms and twelve full or partial baths, with overall square footage is apparently in the range of 14,000. The main house is nineteen eighties vintage, and features large living room with fireplace, a professional screening room, and an artist’s studio. The master suite boasts two separate bathrooms and private sitting room. Terraces and patio offer sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. There are stone walking paths through the gardens which speckle the property, and a stone-and-lawn checkerboard motif leading up to and away from the rear entrance.

Beyond the main house is a pair of guesthouses, staff and security quarters, tennis court, outdoor kitchen and dining area, and 35-car garage.

Lear was a writer, producer and guiding spirit of such 70’s stalwart situation comedies as ‘All in the Family’ and ‘The Jeffersons,’ a man with a gift for identifying topical cultural and sub-cultural themes and exploiting them as meaningful pop-cultural dialogues. Always known as a progressive political activist, he champions first amendment rights and religious tolerance; he is also a trustee for the Paley Center, which is dedicated to continuing the discussion about cultural and social significance in popular media.
