Tesla Tops Automakers in ‘Consumer Experience’ According to Global Study

After a rocky summer, the news for Tesla just keeps looking up. Group XP, the New York-based brand and experience consultancy, recently released its findings from a study of brands in 46 industries and Tesla received the No. 1 ranking in the auto industry with a score of 116.79. That figure puts the electric luxury car maker at No. 20 among all 43,000 worldwide brands Group XP rated.

Besting BMW (114.19) and Mercedes-Benz (111.98) has to feel good for Tesla CEO Elon Musk, but it may not come as a surprise. The stalwart mass-market luxury automakers have been playing catch-up for some time. BMW’s i8 saw its first deliveries in 2014—a full eight years after Tesla introduced its Roadster—while Mercedes-Benz introduced an electric-dedicated brand, EQ, just a few weeks ago at the Paris Auto show.

The four jargon-heavy criteria on which Group XP’s study focused were “Impression: Stand for something unique; Interaction: Deliver on your most important needs; Responsiveness: Have better online services and engaging content; [and] Resilience: Strive to make people’s future lives better through higher brand purpose.”

In the comments on XP’s Tesla entry, they note the “breathtaking completeness of Tesla’s vision,” saying the American automaker’s “ability to execute matches other, more established breakthrough leaders like Ikea and Amazon.”
