BMW’s M5s have come a long way since the 400-horsepower E39 M5 debuted in 1998. This year’s M5 model makes an impressive 560 horsepower for a five-seat sedan. And now BMW has the answer for M5 fans looking for that extra bit of power and luxury with the Competition Edition of what has become one of the German brand’s most popular models.

The Competition Edition gains a 40-hp boost under the hood, bringing the special edition M5 to 600 hp. It also packs 516 pound-feet of torque thanks to a twin-turbocharged V8. With the extra power, the Competition Edition M5 jumps from zero-to-60 mph in only 3.9 seconds.

With more of a wallop from the V8 engine, BMW gave the Competition Edge M5 a new chassis. The new framework comes complete with stiffer dampers and springs, a slight drop in the ride height, and freshly updated software for the M Active Differential to help the vehicle stay on the road at high speeds.

BMW will offer the Competition Edge M5s in 100 examples of either Carbon Black or Mineral White finishes, with both color schemes earning 20-inch wheels and touches of carbon styling around the outside of the car to complete the aesthetic.

Each Competition Edition M5 will start at $142,800.

There will also be an M5 Pure Metal Silver Edition that shares the same specs as the Competition Edition. The difference comes in the form of the exclusive Pure Metal Silver finish that is applied by hand in a multiple-step process. The special model comes with indicative badges with a limited edition run of 50 examples.
